Babies are prone to constipation and skin rashes, due to their immature digestive system. Whilst its incredibly common, this doesn’t mean the symptoms and discomfort should be left untreated or ignored.
Leaky Gut is a term you may or may not be familiar with but in short it is a compromised digestive system allowing protein molecules to ‘leak’ out of the gut wall. This is a troublesome condition in adults too.
However, it’s not all bad! While leaky gut is unwanted in adults, it’s normal and needed for infants. In babies, a leaky gut provides them with important things such as antibodies from the milk from their mother.
A leaky gut is vital for infants to build their immune system and to mature and strengthen their gut health. Over time as they grow the leaky gut will heal and mature with good nutrition. The common symptoms that we look out for that suggest that an infant’s gut is in need of support are: constipation, skin rashes, highly smelly poos, red cheeks that don’t go away, train tracks of snot pouring out of their little nose that just don’t go away, and once they’re on solids properly. If they have four or more runny and highly smelly poos per day, they’re not digesting things well and this needs to be addressed firstly with diet.
