by Sara Friedman – Massage and Yoga therapist
Over the past few years I have noticed an amazing increase in awareness around the practical benefits of massage. Once considered an ‘indulgence’, many people are now increasingly aware of how massage and bodywork can be used as a deeply powerful therapeutic tool, especially in our fast-paced modern life.
I have been noticing so many of my clients having such nourishing and positive experiences as their self-awareness builds and tension patterns are released, on many levels.
For me, the key benefit from massage therapy is that it stimulates the body’s parasympathetic (rest, relax and digest) nervous system, which helps counteract the effects of physical and mental stress and promotes a more restful sleep. Taking the time to literally unwind in a massage, gives you a better shot at enjoying the deep sleep needed to repair tissue during the night and to cope more effectively with the demands of the day.
To name a few more benefits:
- Alleviates anxiety
- Soothes lower back pain and tension headaches
- Lowers cortisol (stress hormone)
- Improves circulation
