It’s common to have a stuffy or runny nose during pregnancy. About 20-30% of women experience congestion at this time.
This can be a real nuisance in pregnancy because the normal medication you might use is not good for you. Higher amounts of eostrogen contribute to swelling in the mucous membranes which line the nose which cause you to make more mucous. Also the amount of blood in your body increases so your blood vessels expand and this can also lead to swollen nasal membranes. Other hormones may also play a role.
So what can you do about this to help yourself naturally?
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Try a steam inhalation that can relieve the congestion and is often very soothing
- Take a warm shower and spending time in the steam will do a similar job
- Avoid potential irritants such as cigarette smoke and alcohol (most likely you’re doing this already!)
- Have a course of acupuncture treatment – this gets great results and is natural and gentle on your body and your baby. As part of this treatment we always recommend the neti pot… see below.
At the Red Tent, we suggest using a neti pot. It’s a technique that originated in India and helps to flush out your sinuses with warm salty water. You’ll get the best results if you use it once or twice daily whilst you’re experiencing the congestion. We’ve put together a short video for you to show you how we do it. We sell hand-made pots for $35. It’ll be the best $35 you’ve ever spent – we can assure you!
A little note: if the water feels like it’s burning, you’ve put too much salt in, so add more water. If the water feels harsh, there’s not enough salt so add more. When it’s right the water feels smooth :)
