Meditation Course

Red Tent Meditation for Health

A practical and interactive course for beginners

Enrich your life using tools that reduce stress and improve your general health. Research shows that meditation can improve relationships, sleep, memory and concentration, chronic pain, and relieve fatigue, anxiety and depression.

Sometimes we catch ourselves going about our lives in a mechanical kind of way, feeling overburdened, distracted, restless and agitated. Maybe it feels that a lot of the time you’re not really all there, your mind is away, far from the moment at hand, and your thoughts are coming hard and fast, though not always flowing in a way that is helpful.

Meditation is a process of learning how to switch on your awareness, to help you live more mindfully. This course supports you in developing your own practice to use at home, helping to balance your stress and experience a calm and radiant life.

This introductory meditation course will explore and practice meditation as a tool for increasing self-awareness, or mindfulness. As mindfulness increases, we can experience more calm and more ease in our daily lives. We notice an increase in our capacity for compassion and kindness towards others and ourselves. Over time, the benefits of a meditation practice will be appreciated in a healthier mind and a healthier body. We will discuss the documented health benefits of a regular meditation practice.

Meditation in Everyday life

Bassam Younes is offering a 6 week, one hour per week, meditation course. The course starts Friday the 1st of June at 6pm.  This is a nuts-and-bolts, step-by-step guide to meditation. It is meant to be practical and it is meant to be used. You will learn an easy to use, powerful meditation technique that by course’s end will become second nature. You will be able to put it into effective use anywhere.

There are many styles of meditation, every major tradition has its own that they call meditation. And the word is often used loosely to include visualization and relaxation practices. Please understand, however, that this course will deal exclusively with Anapanasati Meditation, which means, breath awareness, or mindfulness, as part of part of full body awareness. This is the first phase of the powerful Vipassana technique.

Whilst Anapanasati confers powers of visualization, relaxation, and much more, it is not concerned with these. Rather it is concerned with leading the practitioner to having clear Insight into his or her true nature.

We will cover the following topics:

  • Right Attitude
  • Right Practice
  • Breath
  • Attention
  • Mindfulness Versus Concentration
  • Right Will
  • What to do with your body, and its distractions
  • What to do with your mind, and its distractions
  • Between thinking and sleeping
  • Setting up at home

Testimonials

“Bassam Younes has been conducting guided meditation classes with Cranbrook staff and students in Years 11 and 12. He has helped a wide variety of people at the school recognise the importance of breath and mind awareness. Bassam’s professional, friendly and effective guidance has been appreciated by all of those he has helped. I would strongly recommend Bassam’s services to anyone looking to introduce meditation in their school or workplace”

- Christophe Gauchat, Coordinator of Pastoral Programmes Cranbrook.

“As someone who had not done any formal meditation classes, I was nervous and unsure of what to expect from my first group meditation with Bassam. I was worried it would be elitist and inaccessible, but it couldn’t have been more the opposite. I found Bassam to be humble and honest. I was inspired by the way he spoke from the heart. I left my first class with a feeling that I had stumbled across something unique, authentic and powerful.”

- Sevasti James (Nurse)

“I had been trying to meditate on and off for three years with little success. When I started one of Bassam’s courses something struck me strait away. Here was someone who spoke from a position of knowing, which only comes about from direct experience. The practice and philosophy behind the meditation was clear and simple and I was able to judge my progress over the first weeks and months. I have now had a daily practice for over a year, and am deeply grateful for the help these classes continue to provide. I highly recommend to anyone who feels they cant “get” meditation. It has immensely enriched my life.”

- Jesse Russell-Williams
Self defense instructor, Business manager

“20 minutes of daily meditation is all it takes… I went from being unsure, habitually doubtful, and in constant negative self-talk, to being able to live more in the moment, where I am forgiving of myself and others, Self-loving and affirming. This is really incredible… The journey he takes you creates a recognition and an experience of ‘Self’ beyond the mind, beyond the concept we might have of ourselves.

“The beauty of Bassam is that the approach to his teaching comes from a place of profound knowing and humility, he feels light somehow, and is completely original. He gives you the tools and you do the rest. And the space he holds allows for an intensity of practice that lets you learn and ask questions, and to share your experience, which is the biggest thing for me.

“I thought I knew ‘how’ to meditate, for years. Through Bassam however, I learned to ‘be in meditation’. A profound difference…”

-Diana Kluijtmans (Director)
