Hi, I’m Kate Levett, Acupuncturist, Researcher, and Mum. I graduated as an acupuncturist in 2006 from the Australian Institute of Applied Sciences in Brisbane, and have been working at the Perinatal Research Unit at the University of Sydney, Northern Clinical School at the Royal North Shore Hospital. Since 2006, I have completed a Masters in Public Health, and am now combining research interests and Chinese Medicine practice while working at the Red Tent. I have 3 children and will be working part-time at the Red Tent and pursuing my studies at the University of Western Sydney, School of Complementary Medicine, doing a PhD in the role of Complementary Medicine in childbirth.

Pregnancy and birth: The most fantastic experience for me was being pregnant and having babies. I had 3 very different experiences with each of my pregnancies, births and recoveries. I feel really passionate about women’s health in particular and how you can support women to get pregnant, have a great pregnancy and birth in a way that suits you. Every woman is different and needs individual attention during her pregnancy. I believe very much in continuity of care during pregnancy and want to provide support for all pregnant women, whether it’s your first bub, or your sixth!

Women’s health and hormonal transitions: I am really aware of how women and girls need to be supported through all kinds of transition times. Hormonal imbalances and Menopause are especially interesting to me, and the effect that acupuncture can have on a woman’s hormonal system in balancing and regulating the smooth flow of blood and hormones. We have had some amazing results. Also having worked in the hospital system for a long time, I am aware of the Western medical system and its requirements.

Immunity and general health: Coming into winter, it is important to boost up your immune system. I am keen to get everyone onto ‘constitutional treatments’ where I can give you a really beautiful boosting treatment to strengthen you from the inside out. Help support yourself and your immune system by having a series of treatments for your constitutional type.

Research: One of my big areas of interest is in research. I have been training and working in research units at the University of Sydney, and now at UWS specifically in women’s health for about 8 years. I worked in Cardiac research for 4 years before that. I believe strongly in evidence based medicine and apply this criterion to my practice of acupuncture. I am currently doing my PhD in the effectiveness of Complementary Medicine for women giving birth, which will help to advance the evidence base of birthing practices using complementary therapies.
